Clarity Starts at the Top

In every leadership position I have taken, it has been critical that I set the stage for who I am, what I stand for, and how I communicate my expectations for those I lead. This is something I learned as a Green Beret and it has proven to be a game changer in the business world.

When we deployed into foreign countries, our mission wasn’t just tactical, it was more strategic and operational. We had to build trust with local forces, align them to a shared vision, and create systems that worked under pressure. That started with clarity: who we were, what we stood for, and how we operated. Without that foundation, chaos ruled. With it, we turned uncertainty into execution and helped those teams become stronger, more capable, and self-sufficient.

Business is no different. When I bought a failing restoration company, I applied the same principle. Before we talked about metrics or processes, I defined my leadership identity and shared it with the team. They knew what to expect from me, how I made decisions, and what behaviors mattered most. That clarity created alignment, trust, and consistency—and it became the first step in building a high-performing team.

Clarity isn’t just for you, it’s for them. When people know what you stand for and how you lead, they feel secure. Uncertainty creates stress and hesitation; clarity builds confidence. It empowers your team to make decisions without fear, reduces friction, and gives them a clear picture of what success looks like. When expectations are clear, people stop guessing and start performing. That’s how trust grows and teams thrive.
